Alfreton has had a market charter since 1252, and in the 18th century it was the chief coal mining centre in Derbyshire. Coal and ironstone brought the Riddings ironworks, opened in 1800, and the railway arrived in 1862. The area went from 2,301 people in 1801 to over 19,000 by 1911.

Most of the brick terraces date from that boom, when brickmaking was a local industry too. Ironville was built by the Butterley Company as a model village for its workers, and Alfreton and Riddings both have conservation areas, Alfreton's since 1971.

In the mid 20th century, much of the older housing was cleared and families moved to newer estates, like Cottage Farm and South Spire in Somercotes. Each needs a different scaffold, and Danny looks at the house before pricing it.

Permits and practicalities
