Belper was a village of nail makers until Jedediah Strutt built his first cotton mill here in 1776. The Strutts went on to build more mills and whole streets of houses for their workers, and Belper is one of the main settlements in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2001.

Short Rows was one of the first groups of houses the Strutts built, and Long Row followed around 1790. The Clusters are blocks of four back-to-back houses, each once with a pigsty. The mill housing is Derbyshire gritstone or local brick, under Welsh slate or Staffordshire blue clay tiles.

The parish has over 250 listed buildings, and an Article 4 direction covers every house in the Belper and Milford conservation area, including things like replacement windows, doors and front walls. Danny looks at the house before pricing the scaffold.
