Eastwood houses

Built on coal,in red brick and slate.

Eastwood grew on coal. Mining took off after the Erewash Canal opened in 1779, and the local coal owners, Barber Walker, stayed until nationalisation. The population went from 735 in 1801 to 4,815 by 1901, and the last pit in the area closed in 1985.

Barber Walker built The Buildings between 1854 and 1860: 213 terraced houses on Princes Street, Victoria Street, Albert Street, Scargill Street and Wellington Street. D. H. Lawrence was born at 8a Victoria Street in 1885, and the house is now his birthplace museum.

The heart of the town has been a conservation area since 1977, with two and three storey Victorian buildings in red brick with slate roofs. Each needs a different scaffold, and Danny looks at the house before pricing it.
