Coal, beerand hosiery.

Kimberley grew as a centre for coal mining, brewing and hosiery. Its two breweries merged in 1930 to become Hardys and Hansons, which brewed here until 2006, and two railway lines came through the town in the 1870s. By 1901 the population had passed 5,000.

The conservation area, designated in 1989 and extended in 2008, protects the Victorian shops and terraces of Main Street and James Street, two and three storeys in red brick. Around Chapel Street and Station Road, the houses are built in a brownish local brick.
