Mansfield has been a market town since 1227. By 1800 it had about 700 knitting frames, the Duke of Portland built cotton mills along the River Maun, and coal was the main industry for most of the 20th century. The railway viaduct across the town centre was finished in 1875.

The town is known for its stone. Mansfield white, a magnesian limestone, is the main building material in the old centre, and red Mansfield stone was quarried in Rock Valley. The district has eleven conservation areas, including the Market Place, West Gate, The Park and Mansfield Woodhouse.

Between 1891 and 1921 the population grew from about 16,000 to nearly 45,000. Forest Town grew around Mansfield Colliery, sunk from 1904, and estates like Ladybrook followed after the war. Each needs a different scaffold, and Danny looks at the house before pricing it.
