Derby grew on silk, the railways and engineering. Britain's first water-powered silk mill was built here in 1717, the Midland Railway made Derby its headquarters, and Rolls-Royce opened a factory in 1907. The population went from under 15,000 in 1801 to over 100,000 by 1901.

That growth left streets of red-brick Victorian terraces in Normanton, Pear Tree and Rose Hill. Railway Terrace, lived in by 1843, is believed to be the earliest housing built for railway workers, and it's now part of one of the city's sixteen conservation areas.

Slum clearance in the 1920s and 30s moved families to new council estates in the suburbs, like Roe Farm in Chaddesden, and building started at Mackworth in 1950. Add the 1930s semis in Alvaston and the newer estates at Oakwood, and each part of the city needs a different scaffold. Danny looks at the house before pricing it.

Permits and practicalities

  • Pavement licences in Derby

    A scaffold on a pavement or road in Derby needs a licence from Derby City Council. The council says the scaffold owner applies, which is us, with at least two weeks' notice, so tell us early. We'll say at the quote whether you need one.

  • In a conservation area?

    Derby has sixteen conservation areas, including the railway streets, Friar Gate and Strutts Park. Scaffolding doesn't need planning permission in any of them. The work you're having done might, so check with Derby City Council's planning team first.

  • Shared walls and chimneys

    On a terrace or a semi, the chimney stack and the party wall often sit on the boundary with next door. If the scaffold needs to go on their side, you'll need their say-so first, so it's worth asking early.

  • Parking and access

    Terraced streets and estate roads fill up with cars. If you can, keep the space outside the house clear on the day so we can get close to unload.
