Stapleford grew on framework knitting and lace. In 1844 the town had 33 stocking frames and 270 lace machines, and by the 1880s there were three lace factories and a silk works. The population went from 748 in 1801 to 5,766 by 1901.

Many of its listed buildings are former framework knitters' cottages and workshops, concentrated around Nottingham Road, and some still have the long workshop windows on the top floor. The Church Street and Nottingham Road conservation areas are orange-red brick with steep Welsh slate roofs.

Around them are late Victorian terraces, semis and newer homes, and the carved stone cross in St Helen's churchyard is over a thousand years old. Each needs a different scaffold, and Danny looks at the house before pricing it.
