Long Eaton houses
A lace townbuilt in red brick.
Long Eaton stayed small until the railway arrived in 1839 and the lace trade followed. By 1907 the town had almost 1,400 lace machines and more than 4,000 people working in the industry. When lace declined in the 1920s, upholstery and furniture making took over.
The town centre and the old lace factories are both conservation areas, built mostly in red brick with Welsh slate roofs and decorative chimney stacks. Streets like King Street, Prince Street and Princess Street are Victorian terraces, and Derby Road has larger villas with bay windows.
Wilsthorpe grew from the 1930s, starting with the Parkside estate, and more houses followed in the late 1950s and after 1970. Each needs a different scaffold, and Danny looks at the house before pricing it.
