Iron, coaland a market town.
Ripley has had a market charter since 1251, but it grew with the Butterley Company, formed in 1790. The company ran the ironworks and owned the local collieries until nationalisation, and the town went from about 1,100 people in 1801 to nearly 12,000 by 1911.
The market hall on the north side of the Market Place, built in 1880, is now the town hall. The parish has 62 listed buildings, and in the 1950s the town council built The Elms estate on the south-western edge of town.
Ripley itself has no conservation area, but if your house is listed, check with Amber Valley Borough Council whether the work needs consent. Each house needs a different scaffold, and Danny looks at it before pricing it.
