Beeston outgrew its village roots as a silk weaving centre in the early 19th century, and lace followed. Humber made bicycles and cars here until 1907, telephones were made on the Ericsson and Plessey site from 1901, and Boots bought its Beeston site in 1927. The population went from 948 in 1801 to nearly 4,500 by 1881.

The West End conservation area, designated in 1976, keeps the old village core around Dovecote Lane, Grange Avenue and Church Street, much of it large Edwardian red-brick semis. St John's Grove, designated in 1993, is late Victorian and Edwardian, and roofs in both are plain tile or Welsh slate.

From 1934 to 1939, 900 houses went up on the Cliftonside estate, and more estates followed for workers at Boots and Ericsson. Each needs a different scaffold, and Danny looks at the house before pricing it.
