Sandiacre grew with the Erewash Canal, which opened in 1779, and with lace. Lace makers moved here in the 1820s, and three big lace factories were built later in the century. The population went from 405 in 1801 to 2,954 by 1901.

Springfield Mill, built in 1888 for lace, was converted to flats in the mid-2000s. The Canal Side conservation area is red brick with slate roofs, and at Cloud Side, St Giles church stands at the end of the Stoney Clouds ridge.

Between 1920 and 1938 new estates went up outside the old centre, including Doncaster Avenue in 1921 and Spencer Avenue in 1933. Each needs a different scaffold, and Danny looks at the house before pricing it.
