Nottingham was built on hosiery and lace, and later on firms like Boots and Raleigh, both founded here in the 19th century. By 1901 the town had nearly 240,000 people, and the fast growth left rows of red-brick terraces in places like Sneinton, Hyson Green and the Meadows.

The city has 33 conservation areas. They include The Park, a private Victorian estate that still has gas street lights, and Mapperley Park, known for its large Victorian and Edwardian houses. The council's own appraisals describe red Nottingham brick and Welsh slate roofs as the traditional materials.

From the 1920s the council cleared slums and built new estates, starting with Aspley, then Broxtowe in the 1930s and Clifton after the war, once said to be the largest council estate in Europe. Each needs a different scaffold, and Danny looks at the house before pricing it.
